GARDEN/RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

The most intimate places we encounter as individuals and families are those places where we reside and spend the majority of our time – such are the garden spaces that define where we live. The architecture and function of the house must be integrated with the outdoor space with which it connects. In the planted environment, all of the senses should be engaged – sight, sound, smell, and touch. Containing the green environment, the structured component of the place both vertical and horizontal must be integral to the total composition. This composition is defined by the principal outdoor room or connected rooms that are punctuated and joined together by different forms of paths, gateways and walls.

As in all of our work we create a place that expresses the unique desire of the user – joining that desire with the essences of natural systems that define the place. For example, the planting design for the accompanying villas overlooking a golf course – is expressed to create a fitting transition from the adjacent Piedmont forest to the broad “bottomland” of the Chestatee River that lies below. It becomes not simply a green planted space, but a discreet expression of where the place is, and what the place wants to be.
